8 Facebook Do’s and Don’ts in the UAE

Arab Social Media Report: According to the “Arab Social Media Outlook 2014” and “Arab World Online 2014” studies, social media usage in the Arab region has grown significantly, with more than 71 million people active on platforms such as Facebook, Google+, YouTube, and Twitter. In the UAE, particularly in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, Facebook boasts the highest number of users.

However, due to incidents of abuse on social media, the government has taken steps to monitor these platforms. To ensure responsible usage, the UAE Telecommunications Regulation Authority (TRA) has released a white paper on important dos and don’ts for Facebook users in the country.

Violence

Avoid posting content that promotes hate speech, incites violence, or contains graphic or unnecessary violence. The UAE, being a conservative country, strictly prohibits the sharing of obscene and malicious content.

Mature Content

Do not run applications containing alcohol, dating, or other mature content without appropriate restrictions. Additionally, follow guidelines for contests, promotions, and commercial communications, avoiding spam messages.

Adhere to social and religious ethics

Respect UAE laws, which prohibit the publication of material against public morality, Islamic principles, and the social and moral well-being of the country. Avoid mocking the UAE and its traditions.

Harassment

Refrain from bullying, threatening, or harassing others. Cyberbullying is a punishable offense in the UAE, and any Facebook status that damages a person’s reputation is considered harassment.

Sharing Sensitive Information

Do not post other people’s identification documents or sensitive financial information on Facebook. If collecting information from others, ensure clear communication and post a privacy policy explaining data use.

Tagging without permission

Get consent before tagging other users. Using others’ photos and videos without their permission may lead to claims for defamation and breach of privacy under UAE law.

Viruses

Do not upload viruses or malicious code that could impair or damage the proper functioning of Facebook.

Responsibility

Take responsibility for the content you upload. Obtain appropriate permissions to post copyrighted or private content. Repeated violations of intellectual property rights may result in the deactivation of a user’s account and possible legal consequences.

By following these guidelines, Facebook users in the UAE can contribute to a positive online environment while respecting the country’s laws and cultural norms. Always remember that everyone is accountable for their actions online, and ignorance of the law is no excuse for illegal behavior.
